Dear Eric,
That's in interesting question! I am very interested in the
early 16c repertoire and am also a great fan of Claudin - in
general terms I would second Sean's opinion: you don't
find that kind of music in the very early lute manuscripts - principally
Pesaro, Thibault & Capirola. In British Library Ms. 31389 (Venice,
c. 1520) there is an anonymous setting of the song "Altro non el
mio amor" which is also known in later settings by Claudin and others.
(An edition of Ms. 31389 edited by myself & John Robinson is almost
ready for publication by the Lute Society).

There are several intabulations of chansons by Claudin by
Marco Dall'Aquila in Munich Ms. 266. There is nothing there
that could prove that they were composed pre- the Attaignant prints,
but Marco was a mature musician long before the time
of the Attaignant publications and so was Claudin, and Ms. 266 seems
to have been copied from earlier sources. Did Claudin's chansons
circulate in manuscript before the Attaignant prints? It certainly
seems that Attaignant printed the music of his time that was
already popular, but it's likely too that his work extended
their popularity. I would like to know more about this too!

Best wishes,

Denys
