>>> A 1694 collection of violin+continuo sonatas by Johann Paul von Westhoff >>> contains a movement entitled IMITAZIONE DEL LIUTO (as the 3rd movement of >>> the 2nd sonata in d-moll, in the collection). >>> The said piece bears (more than) striking resemblance to SLWeiss' Gigue >>> from the Sonata #7.
>> all I know is that according to MGG, J. Paul von Westhoff's 1694 >> compositions rest on the heritage of Carlo Farina. Perhaps there's a >> common treasure to von Westhoff and Weiss? > I doubt it. The JPvW sonatas sound not at all like Farina's. They are quite > modern for 1694. The theme of the Imtatio is identical to SLW's Gigue. > There are differences in the developments. I'm not an expert on von Westhoff. All I wanted to say was that Carlo Farina's music would be one possible direction of research. After all, the MGG author on Farina had his reason to state that von Westhoff (among others) was an immediate heir to Farina's, I suppose. As for Weiss, I just had in mind the famous quote by Baron that Weiss spielte ganze Violin-Concerten von ihren Noten weg (would play music for the violin from first sight). I take this to imply that Weiss was occupied with music for the violin for some time. -- Regards, Mathias http://de.geocities.com/mathiasroesel http://mathiasroesel.livejournal.com -- To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
