The angelique is essentially a converted _theorbo_, not a lute. In this case, the theorboed extension was already there and the "swan-necking" was merely a characteristically French architechtural flourish of an existing product. According to Burwell, the French did _not_ favor extended necks for their actual lutes, and this was the state of that instrument as Weiss first came to know it.
