Edin wasn't talking about "knowing things," he was talking about  
"playing the lute well."  I've read books on the subject.  They may  
have taught me a lot, but they didn't improve my playing.  I believe  
that to "play the lute well" one needs to take the time it would take  
to read 30 books and use it for hands-on experience of luteplaying.
