Do you mean as in loosening the strings from 440 down to 415 or less? I find that it depends on the lute. When I do that on my 62 cm. 6-course the sound is weak, whereas on my 66.5 cm. 10-course the sound is stronger, better all-round in fact, when tuned down a half- step.
