Dear Peter, Arthur and all
That does seem very good value from Naxos (see Peter and Arthur's
messages below), and if you want to have
this particular version on your computer to study it. I think that is
excellent.
However, I am glad you call it so-called "FM" quality, Peter. I
suppose it may be DAB
quality. Unfortunately, that is still well below true analogue FM
quality.

The lute is a very delicate instrument in deed to record
successfully. I think we really have to underline the need
for recordings that capture as much of the low level detail and the
microdynamics of the lute, as possible.
There are very few CDs that do the instrument justice. You need a
very capable sound-engineer who understands
the weaknesses of low sampling digital. Even CD is very poor at
capturing low level sound.

I know of only a few very well recorded CDs, and they often come from
smaller specialist companies.
I suppose Bis is now part of the Naxos empire, but the sound
engineers there, did seem to have done a good job
with the Lindberg/Rauwolf/Weiss. Jacob Heringman's "Sienna Lute book"
CD is also quite well recorded; but it
seems that he may well oversee the Avie/Magnatune engineers. He
definitely pays attention to microphone
placement himself, according to his excellent interview by ED Durbrow
at http://www9.plala.or.jp/edurbrow/Heringman.html
However, his exceptional projection (as I was able to hear myself
during his performance of pieces from this
work at Caen, France) and his use of gut basses giving over all good
mid and treble clarity may well help the
engineer's work.

Jakob Lindberg also mentioned that he had completely strung his
Rauwolf in gut, during the Lute society concert in
London; so this may have played a role in his recording as well.

As we are still in the period of good cheer, I am ceratinaly not
saying these are the only decent recordings, I only mention them
as the ones that come to my mind right now; and I am also certain
that well damped wound basses could give good mid and treble clarity.

Continued good cheer to all
Best regards
Anthony
