Check out the US trade commission website:

<http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/index.htm>

It's got most info you need, although digging through everything to find what's
applicable can take a little time. Anyway, if I'm reading this correctly, you
will have to pay 4.6% on the declared value. (Hopefully the maker didn't
describe it on the paperwork as a "guitar" because that would make it 8.7%.)
I'm not sure what kind of duty there is on a case, but if you bought it as a
package deal, then I think it's all included. Here's a link for the chapter on
musical instruments.

You can also read the "general notes" section for more info on how to read this
chart:

Good luck.

Subject: [LUTE] Import duty for instrument shipped to US

Hi All,

I have been informed by Luciano Faria, my luthier in Brazil, that my lute
shipped yesterday. Does anyone know if I will have to pay import duty? Does
it just show up on my doorstep?

Jim
