I saw the secret pegs on a friend's viola da gamba. They look exactly like pegs, but have gears inside. Very cool. And historical! There are literally thousands of paintings which show pegs that may very well have gears inside that we can't see. This is far more persuasive than all the paintings of natural trumpets that have holes in them that we can't see.
