Very, very, general rules: 1st finger 1st fret, 2nd finger 2nd fret 3rd finger 3rd fret, but 4th finger 3rd fret on 1st and 2nd strings. Sounds like you could use some lessons. You don't want to develop bad habits. Do what is comfortable, is also a good principle to follow. When there are two or more ways to finger something, try the different ways comparing them to see which is easier and more musical. Context will guide you and alter what fingering you use. Fingering is really part of the nuts and bolts that facilitates the art in this. You can always run it by the list. We are happy to help one another. cheers, PS. Rereading your post it sounds like you are talking about a bar chord. Again, it is not always necessary to bar all the way across all the courses. You can often make it work with fewer strings barred. This may not work in some cases if a course falls right where the crease in the finger is. You'll have to adjust it in that case.
