Lutenists interested in honing their continuo skills in a performance
setting are encouraged to take part in the first modern performance of
John Blow's new year ode, "With Cheerful Hearts," for solo singers,
chorus, and orchestra at this January's Amherst Early Music Winter
Weekend Workshop at Rutgers University in Camden, NJ. The workshop
takes place over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, from Friday,
January 16 through Monday, January 19.
Richard Stone, baroque lute, theorbo and continuo instructor at the
Peabody Institute, will teach the workshop's lute classes and lead the
performance of the Blow ode, which will wrap up the workshop on the
final day. Intermediate and advanced lute/theorbo continuo players will
be able to accompany vocal coachings for the Blow project throughout
the day as part of their preparation for the performance. All players
can take part in many enjoyable classes and ensembles at the workshop,
including baroque dance, all-workshop collegium and chamber music and a
faculty concert in the historical district of Philadelphia.
Music for the Blow project is available for download to registered
participants who wish to work out their continuo in advance.
Credit is available for college students.
