Haven't seen the movie yet, but just returned from a conference in Nottingham,
UK. Little did I know that Nottingham is now widely known, not only for Robin
Hood, but it has apparently become the bachelorette party (hen party ) & stag
party capital of the midlands. Nottingham castle has an inexpensive EMS
8-course lute on display in the 'History of Nottinham' section - always nice to
see a lute on display. Nice town, great pubs, and quite an interesting
nightlife.

Subject: [LUTE] Robin Hood

Dear ones,

I just returned from the movie theater, where I saw the new movie,
Robin Hood, portrayed by Russell Crowe. Has anyone on the list seen
it yet? I thought it was done very well.

Of interest to this list is that one of the band of Merry Men,
playing the role of the minstrel Allan A'Dayle, is Alan Doyle; he
is a folk musician in a modern Celtic group, entitled, "The Great Big Sea".

There are many scenes in which Allan A'Dayle is playing a lute; this
was built by Dan Larson for the project. It is a dark instrument,
with rosewood back & neck, and the top is of Spanish Red Ceder. It
was comforting to see and hear a real lute in the movie, although
most or all of the music was not period music. Still, it is very enjoyable.
