A friend's daughter has suddenly decided she wants to play the lute. She has found this, surprisingly inexpensive, instrument:

Presumably it's made in the Far East (as reckoned from here in UK). There was a recent discussion on early guitar ning, led by Valery, about the ethics of buying such instruments. Taking the charitable view that this is giving work to people in another country and leading to work by home-grown makers when players want a better instrument, I wonder if anyone has any views..

..a first instrument for a teenager who may lose interest.

I looked at a Blue Moon (Pakistani) lute in a shop one time. I didn't have much time but it felt light enough and seemed OK. And this Lacewood instrument is even cheaper.
