Hi, David and all.

First, bravo on your efforts, David! More citterns = more fun.

A long time ago I built several historical citterns with some success,
one still in use by Mark Cudek. Looking at your photos, I think the
intonation problems involved with scalloped fingerboards might be
exacerbated in your case by using modern fret wire (at least it looks
   like that in the photo).

Historically, cittern frets were made with brass (or other hard
material) bars inlaid into the fretboard, with shallow scallops (I made
them about 1/32 inch or less deep) serving to raise them above the
"surface" of the fingerboard. I used to set them into the board,
surface it flush, and then sand out the scallops with a small drum
sander. This way, the scallop serves to make the intonation steadier,
since the wood slopes right up to the back of the fret, making the
distortion minimal when you place your fingers near the fret. If you
put modern raised frets on top of the scallops, you not only lose this
advantage, you make the situation worse. I'll try to send you a photo
with details of the frets. There used to be several working drawings
of historical citterns available which showed this clearly.

I'm not sure how the deeply scalloped fretboards of early 20th century
   German lute-guitars relate to this.

I also had special tuning pegs with small diameter barrels made to
lessen tuning problems, but unfortunately it may be too late for that
   in your case.

Another aside: I'm sure more research has been done since I was up on
this, but as I remember carved and built-up citterns seem to have
coexisted for quite some time in the 16th century, with a small amount
of evidence for a South/North divide, rather than the historical
development of style that you assume. Somewhat surprisingly, I seem to
recall that of the surviving examples, the larger were carved, while
the smaller ones were built. It looks like the new Lute in Europe book
people have been abuzz about might have quite a bit of new and newly
   coordinated information on this.

Also, just curious, but what kind of spike lutes do you have experience
making? I play shamisen and san xian.

   I hope this helps.

Best to all, and keep playing,

   Chris.

Definitely not historical. My experience is in building spike

(where the sound box takes little or no load from the string
     tension),
so this is just me staying in my comfort zone. I suppose there may
     have
been instruments built like this as "carved from a single piece of
wood" medieval instruments gave way to piece-built renaissance
     ones,
but it's not documented as far as I know.
It has no effect at all on the sound except, perhaps to increase
sustain since the resulting structure may be stiffer. On an
     instrument
with no sound post, vibration of the back is not a significant
     part of
the sound (and even if it were, the carry-through doesn't actually
touch the back). The volume of the carry-through subtracts from
     the
sound chamber volume and, thus, raises the Helmholtz resonance
     central
pitch a tiny amount... but its volume is no more than the volume
     of the
back bracing on an historical instrument.
