Hello!

Joachim Lüdtke and me wrote the book "The Lute in Europe 2" and after some
mails from this list with questions we like to give some informations -
specially for the owner of the first book, too.

The first 120 page book "The Lute in Europe. A History to Delight" was more or
less focussed on lutes. The new book "The Lute in Europe 2" gives an overview
on lutes, guitars, mandolins and citterns, has 447 pages and a poster.
The concept is close to the first book:
- We have made a choice of around 150 photos (there were "only" 31 in the 1st
edition) nearly completely new. Only some tablature examples (CH-Bu F IX 56, F
IX 70, Paladin 1560, Milan 1536) and the chitarra battente from Basel are the
same pictures (besides of the small thumbs for the overview of lute types, the
systematic pictures with bridges and roses and the pictures of the open Martin
Hoffmann as an example for the construction and inversion from a 11c. to a 13c.
baroque lute with bass rider).
- The pictures and captures are a unity, chronologically arranged, and you can
first only enjoy the pictures and read the captures - so you will have a good
entry to the topics.
- The main text is written as simple as possible, but the content is (we hope)
a good summary of the state of the art, but with some own new additions (f.ex.
a new hypothesis on the dissemination of the lute in Europe or the history of
the plucked instruments between the decline of the lute and the rise of the 6
string guitar).
- New in the main text is the historical section with an overview from 1200
until 2010. The systematic section is corrected and enlarged - f.ex. with a
chapter "Music and proportion" including the temperature questions. So only
parts of the old text are reused. AND: The translation is completely new - and
many reactions say that this time the language is MUCH better than in the first
book. We learned ;-) and a big thankyou to David van Edwards!
- Beside of the pictures and the main text there is a third level: We made more
than 440 notes who should give a guide to the specialized literature - that's
the really hard stuff for professionals.
- The poster gives a visualization of the chronological appearance and use of
the lutes and mandolins on one side, of the guitars and citterns on the other
page - with over 900 flags of sources. These flags include the today country
where the source appeared, the type (musical source printed / as a manuscript,
iconographical source, text source) and a short reference. We will give the
complete list of these short references with the "normal" bibliographical notes
on the homepage www.accordsnouveaux.ch very soon - and also the places index
and other indexes.

So the second book - for this reason the "2" in the title - is a very enlarged
version with nearly all new pictures and mainly new text - and the pictures
from the first book and these of the second book give together a wonderful
collection of very high quality pictures of lutes, guitars, mandolins and
citterns.

A good first impression gives the website

ABOUT DELIVERY:

We like to make this book as cheap as possible because not all lute players or
interested people have a lot of money. So the transport should also be as cheap
as possible. Because of the weight of 1.4 kg each book we are working on
delivery stations not only in Europe (see the homepage), but also in the USA,
Australia and Japan. Of course you can order directly. We always will choose
the cheapest solution for the delivery to you. You can also have a look on the
homepage - we publish all deliveries when they are organized. For the USA we
can give the following address (he will receive the books very soon):

Harp Guitar Music
P.O. Box 573155
Tarzana, CA 91357
gr...@harpguitarmusic.com

For Australia we are just preparing the solution. For Japan we are still
looking for a good solution. If somebody can help, please contact us!

So: Enjoy the book and your instrument(s)!
