I am currently working on a research project that will employ a theory
based on Baxandall to examine Italian Renaissance paintings,
particularly ones by Venetian painters, that have as one of their
subjects the lute--"The Lute Observed", if you will. A study of the
meanings of the lute as a matter of musical iconography of the period.
I would be most grateful to hear any suggestions on relevant
   literature.

   Many thanks,

   Dori
