Dear lutenists
Our petition to the EU and EU governments has had an intitial
success in relation to the Italian government, which has swiftly taken
note of the petitions just demands, now allowing the import of raw gut
from some European and non European countries, as well as allowing the
use of some Italian beef gut. This happy result will of course be
applicable to both the Italian string makers, Aquila and Toro (who also
supported the petition, and who is the main supplier of several other
gut string companies in the EU).
I am personally relieved to see that Aquila now does plan to restart
gut string making, and so loaded gut may be back (for which I
personally thank all those who signed).

I believe it is still worth signing the petition, if you have not done
so, as it seems that each EU country has to shift its own
interpretations of the EU rulings. Furthermore, the petition goes
further and calls for a World Heritage status for gut string making.
   Thanks to all
   Anthony
