Dear Markus,

James Tyler and other scholars regard this tablature as for mandore, not guitar, based on the tuning and style of music. I looked at this manuscript at the Sibley just last week. Here is the entry on my web page:

US-R Ms. Vault M125 .FLXVII [1670]
(Germany) [RISM B/VII p. 301 (with many inaccuracies, see: TYLER p. 142)]
5-string mandore in French tablature
11-course lute in French tablature

It would be a difficult argument to follow Boetticher and the 1930s auctioneer and say that this is guitar music . . .

This scordatura seems to be quite interesting.
Probably it might be - I tried it out, (and now found it also mentioned
in the Database of the Accords Noveaux site): hfhf
In french notation (course-fret):
1a = 2h
2a = 3f
3a = 4h
4a = 5f

Thanks so much Arthur! Any idea why the item description refers to
the tab as "the so called New French" notation?

Chris

And the opening guitar pieces are in scordatura. Don't know which one.
