Definitely not something I would try. Martin's suggestions sound far less adventurous (hardly surprising as he is a professional maker). I have never encountered problems with body frets on my lutes.

Just pry them off with a razor blade. I've done it many times. Seems like a lot

   Hello Lutenet,
Does anyone have any advice for removing the body frets on a lute? (The
10th-12th frets on my lute are horrendously out of tune and the builder
seems to have changed his email address.)
Should I just try a small knife underneath the fret? I worry about
accidentally scraping wood off of the soundboard.
I'd appreciate any help you could give me.
   Thanks,
   Kyle
