‎Forget the Horace, Peter, and also the question about the identity of A! H is
"Humanistenoden" stuff, that means: information about lute versions of music
composed to set texts from ye olde latin classics for the use in Latin Schools
has somehow contaminated the informational content refering to Hofhaimer
intabulations, erm... "A": does not refer to a Person, but to the beloved girl
or lady the text is directed to. The name of the adored one must not be
mentioned in the song to guard her honour against the Jealous, the Faux
Jaleux... German song lyrics of the late fifteenth/early sixteenth century is
either bawdy or - as in this case - a late blossoming of Trouvere/Troubador
song. All best and a belated Happy New Year, dear list! Gioacchino detto Il

Betreff: [LUTE] Mein Einigs A

   Hello all,
   Back to the old stuff!
There's a lovely little piece in Newsidler's 1536 book with the cryptic
title of Mein Einigs A. A seems to be a person. Does anyone know
   who A is?
HMB identifies this song (and several other Newsidler pieces) as being
by Hofhaimer, and IMSLP suggests that Hofhaimer's words may be settings
of Odes by Horace. By which point I am rather lost.....
   Peter
