More specific, kroatian mercenaries. But that would be an awfully early apearance. They fought for the emperor during the 30 year war (from ~1620). There _might_ have been kroatian soldiers during the first siege of Vienna 1529, but I doubt the song is that young. Of course, if Böhme's apparatus is correct his version is from the 18th century. Those text often have quite some variance and often where rewritten and adapted.
