Edward: Check your string adjacent if possible and see how much stretch it actually uses. Roland's advice sounds plausible. At 72cm I have a little stretch (and less on the 60cm) but you should have ~3x as much at 180cm. That may be all you need. Although I don't have an extended neck, I do this all the time with gut strings. I've probably saved quite a few dollars over the years. For the top 3 courses, it's so gratifying to get two lengths from a 120cm string on a 60cm lute. It doesn't work quite as well for roped strings but there the secret is to not cut a too-long string but to wrap the remainder around the pegbox. Later, just reverse the string. (yes, I realize this isn't applicable in the giraffes's cases but I hope it is helpful to others) Sean Sean
