This won't help you (but it might be of interest to others): the Systemd
developers have been working on this. In particular, since every user session
or system daemon occupies its own container, it's possible to limit CPU time
and other resources of the appropriate container in order to control over-all
usage. Thus in theory (and probably in practice - I don't have a machine with
Systemd installed) you could limit the CPU time allocated to your X session,
or perhaps it's possible to run Thunderbird in a different container.
