The netif can be used, but I dislike the idea of extra pbuf status flags. I can imagine one would use NIOS (to run lwip) or other FPGA based processing to speed up the checksum calculations. AFAIK Altera and Xilinx did some lwip porting, maybe this would be a nice feature for them. I agree the original idea coined by EVS looks rather crude, and I doubt if it works.
