I'd like to add I was able to solve this problem - there was a condition which would skip over the clearing of my application buffers, and as a result the application would request a pbuf_alloc of an unreasonable size. It's got nothing to do w/ LWIP, and the stack seems to be functioning wonderfully now. My use of dynamically allocated transmit pbufs appears to work just fine. I apologize for the inconvenience.
