it may not be appropriate for your setup -- depending on the
services/protocols you run -- but i use a reverse proxy for these
sorts of things.

we utilize a handful of nginx instances to proxy pop3/imap/smtp/http
to backend servers on various internal machines ... this lets us
mostly forget about IP and DNS :-)  we can run N instances
simultaneously, and switch by updating the proxy config when ready.

... not a solution to the question you asked, but maybe a solution to
the problem you have.
