Well, that was anticlimactic.  Here's the script, for what it's worth.
The only notable thing about it is that its minimum cycle time is 9
seconds, i.e.
  lxc-start-ephemeral-forever -- -o demo_ubuntu_1204 -u ubuntu date
outputs times that are 9 seconds apart.  That's a little more overhead
than seems necessary.
