If you need gnome-applets, just use gnome-panel. That's what gnome-panel is designed for and it does it well. If you freqently find that you need gnome-applets, that means gnome-panel is more suitable than lxpanel for you. So just use it. Don't refuse to use gnome applications just for political reasons.
