Dear Russell Bell, I had a similar problem when I was using the propriety AMD drivers several years ago. I never solved it. I just changed drivers. My memory is hazy on the matter, but your description sounds word for word identical to my problem. You might tell us what GPU driver the differing kernels are using. The output of 1: lsmod 2: Reboot to old kernel 3: lsmod would do nicely.
