It isn't - single ^E still goes to end-of-line, so ^Ee should go to the
end-of-line, then append an 'e' character to the text.  

(Well if you never use ^E as EOL, you could personally redefine it to
be the equivalent of an ^X or even a ^V - if something like Ilya
Zakharevich's recent patch is added to the code.)
