I'll build a current lynx today (I do have dtterm at home as well as at
work, but was comparing color_xterm, which afaik behaves similarly - dtterm
of course runs on Solaris; Sun doesn't support my PCI modem so I tend to
run Linux or FreeBSD when I connect to check my email).

That sounds right (it might be less trouble in the long run to change
lynx.cfg to use 'default', since iirc, it recognizes that keyword for
all configurations).
--btw, it is not only an ncurses issue, since I had noticed that recent
versions of slang do roughly the same thing. The original impetus was
a bug report in mutt which asserted that ncurses was incorrect because
slang did this - I came up with this as a compromise (I'm not done with
it yet though, since I have an odd case with mutt that I have to analyze).
