Hi everyone,
If anyone remembers, there used to be a guy on this list named Michael Sokolov
back in the spring of 1998, who was maintaining the abandoned-by-everyone-else
True Lynx inherited from Foteos Macrides, version 2.7.2. Well, that's me, and
I'm back. Yes, I know, I was missing for almost two years. But that was due to
circumstances completely beyond my control. When I was doing my UNIX/Internet
projects two years ago I was working at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU)
in Cleveland, OH. When I left CWRU in August 1998, I lost my VAX UNIX farm
there and since then didn't have any machines of my own on ARPA Internet until
last weekend. As I was in no shape for UNIX/Internet software projects like
Lynx, I wasn't doing anything with it and wasn't subscribing to this list.
A lot of things have happened in these two years. I've moved from Cleveland, OH
to Dallas, TX and I have a major new affiliation as a commissioned public
service agent at the International Free Computing Task Force (IFCTF), part of
the International Engineering and Science Task Force (IESTF). My plans about
maintaining my own operating system, Berkeley VAX UNIX, came true, see:
http://minnie.cs.adfa.edu.au/Quasijarus/
I have my own major computing facility with VAXen running my 4.3BSD-Quasijarus
operating system, and last weekend it became connected to ARPA Internet (via a
mechanism designed and implemented by me).
This means that now my work on Lynx is officially resumed. Lynx v2.7.2MS can be
found at:
ftp://ivan.Harhan.ORG/pub/unix/apps/lynx/
lynx2-7-2ms.zip is the source distribution. Right now it's the same as it was
when I suspended the project two years ago. Soon I'll try building it on
4.3BSD-Quasijarus to see if it builds and runs correctly (back at CWRU I ran
VAX Ultrix), and if not, make a mod.
With my new affiliation I will have extremely little time for Lynx for the
foreseeable future, as IFCTF and IESTF have much, much bigger projects for me.
(IFCTF is leading a total world computing revolution based on a whole hardware
platform and operating system (total world VAX BSD domination), and IESTF is
doing even bigger stuff in engineering and science in general (biomedical
research, nothing less).) However, as far as Lynx is concerned, I will provide
4.3BSD-Quasijarus VAX UNIX users with a version of Lynx that works under this
purest form of UNIX in the world.
