You should get the same with 'z' or CTRL/G, but without the prompt.
That's the only way to do it on other-than-VMS.

There was a problem with ftp directory listings from some servers,
introduced during 2.8.3dev, but it should be gone now (since 2.8.3dev.22).
So you shouldn't need CTRL/C (or 'z') as often any more.
