Thanks for your suggestion, Thomas. I tried the above, and configure
exited after "withval=~/lynx/share". Not sure what to make of it, I
created that directory manually and changed all my directories reference
from ~/lynx to $HOME/lynx.... and it works! Installation went smoothly
after that hiccup.
Thanks for the help (though still puzzled as to what caused the error
initially).
