Perhaps it's the other way around, i.e., you need a mailcap entry since
you are not using the standard default for .Z files, uncompress.  I would
expect Lynx to fail to uncompress a .Z file if the command were not available
or the path could not be determined, unless Lynx knew of some alternative.

I suppose the possibility is remote, but SUFFIX/VIEWER pairs in lynx.cfg
could influence Lynx's handling of files with a particular extension, besides
a PERSONAL_EXTENSION_MAP.
