It is not a problem of our maketitle trick in itself, but just a
problem with the \author{}, \title{} and other macros of book
class. They are not supposed to be used to add images. The right
soltution in this case is to use \begin{titlepage}...\end{titlepage}.
In fact, the best solution is to use a document class for your
universty which does everything right with just a \maketitle :)
