Hello,
Together with Peter I've been working on the Aspell issues during the
past days. Unfortunately there is no solution yet.
All current Windows versions of Aspell have a bug that causes spell
checker crashes. It depends on the system and build environment whether
the crash is triggered or not. I have had crashes with both MinGW as
well as MSVC compiled versions.
Apparently the current 1.4.2-1 Windows package seems to work fine on
most systems. I have not received reports of spell checker crashes.
There is however no guarantee that any future releases will work.
It looks like support for more modern spell checkers will not be added
to LyX 1.4 anytime soon, so Aspell is the only option right now. This
probably means that the 1.4.3 Windows release will be delayed until the
bug is fixed.
Aspell is not being very actively developed anymore and the maintainer
doesn't seem to support Windows, so I have no idea how long it will
take. If anyone wants to take a look at the bug, a method that will
always reproduce it is given at
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1555321&group_id=245&atid=100245
I also noticed the problem with the first misspelled word not being
checked is back. Wasn't this supposed to be fixed?

Joost
