IMHO, it is a good interim solution.
I don't have any experience with Qt and the LyX frontends, so
unfortunately I can't provide a patch to put this in the LyX GUI itself.

For 1.5, Edwin said that he is willing to work on that already. I'll try
to help whenever I can but this is not for 1.4 anyway (unless somebody
is willing to backport this vaporware that is).
