also the "box" around the math inset is not always displayed when

The problem is that displaying it would provoke a full redraw and
repaint. I think it is OK if we don't displayed it when clicking but
only when typing characters. This is a good compromise for
performance IMHO as you don't really need the frame when navigating a
formula, or do you?
the box is a indication that the inset got focus, so i find it a bit
confusing as it is now (although i guess that this is in part because i
am used to them).
more importantly, it is impossible atm to place the cursor correctly
with the mouse in situations where these boxes are needed to know where
things are going to be inserted.
This is bad indeed.
(are there situations where the cursor position is not enough? if not
then we could get rid of these boxes altogether?)
It would be a good idea to collect those cases and to implement special
visual hints for these cases instead of relying on the box corners.
For example, in the case of \mathbf, I don't think the box is a good
hint because it is very easy to miss that out. Maybe a simple small
unbreakable space before and after the \mathbf would be a better hint.
Or maybe a different background color?
i would also argue for consistent behavior.
isn't there a way to only toggle the drawing of the frame without
redrawing the contents since nothing changed here?
As it is now, no way. We have to redraw everything.
thanks, ed.
PS if i selecting something in a math inset and then move the cursor
right or left the selection is not cleared
Indeed, I will solve that.
