I had a look (without actually running anything) at plastex today and it
looks pretty good. It's probably even closer to a real TeX parser than
tex2lyx.

It indeed looks promising. It sounds like all we need to add is a
XML->lyx renderer, and even this step can be ignored if we use XML
format directly.

The only problem I can see is that this project is young (6 month
old?), with only two developers.
