To be able to write formulas quickly you have to kno the commands. Using the math dialog costs too much time. So what you want to know as new user is the commands because writing "\langle " in math is faster than opening a dialog and choose this character from a list. So if you as new user use the dialog it is nice tho see the command to get the next time rid of the dialog usage. Especially for math, I haven't seen LyXers using the math panel but only typing commands in math to get symbols.

Personally I don't know LFUNS and never felt that this is a lack of knowledge.
