Speaking as an ol' user, I don't find the 'toggling' function weird...
To me it seems logical.
How about if you create a new LFUN, that instead of toggling the 'bold',
it sets the bold? Or if you modify the LFUN to take an argument?
Then users can choose between the toggle mode and the 'set' mode?
I think you should at least file a bugzilla enhancement request, referring
to this thread.
