So it shouldn't be under src/ but similarly positioned as booost

If it works externally, why not. But didn't you say you need tar like
capabilities that's usually not found in whatever-zip?

But you can't commit a knowingly non-compiling version. At the very
least #if 0 out the stuff. My 'ok' was under the assumption that the
feature might not _work_ when compiled with autotools, but not that
LyX won't compile anymore.
