Let me add that (on Linux) despite
with options \"'--enable-stdlib-debug' '--enable-debug' '--prefix=/home/rgheck/dev' '--disable-pch' '--disable-shared' '--enable-static'\" when I run make install (using autotools) I get a bunch of libraries installed, which really slows things down.

That said, compilation does seem faster.
