The defaults are set in configure.py. Look at the various checkProg
lines. But users can do what they like, so there's no predicting what's
there. So I doubt there's any reliable way to deal with this. That said,
suppose we know that the viewer is "update capable". Maybe there's a
flag somewhere about that. Then maybe we can make view and update the
same. But whether that's worth doing, I don't know.
