I guess there are many more Greek letters. My question is: why are
they not added before? Is it because of the insertion of $$?

I believe so, yes. The Ancient Greeks were famed for their mathematical prowess, but it's a bit of a leap to state that all Athenian bloggers write in math.

There are, of course, Greek packages for LaTeX...
