You shouldn't conclude from you to others. My experience is that 90% of the Word users like the red underlining.

I still don't understand what is the problem of highlighting the problematic characters when LyX tells you that "a caracter" can't be encoded. We do already the same, when LyX shows LaTeX-errors.

This cannot be your truth. We don't program LyX when looking into LaTeX is the _most_useful_ thing. If you really think so, then you should talk to average LyX users.
