This is what I would do. FWIW, I did some google-voting for different expressions: word.count: 7 770 000 entries character.count: 813 000 entries paragraph.count: 6 320 entries. I think this says a lot about the relative interest for these different metrics. BTW the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_count gives interesting information about word counting.
