How about applying the patch until this is done with a big "REMOVE THIS" ?
I would have a go at moving initialisation into frontends/ myself, but I'm
not too sure of what Allan et al would prefer and I'd rather let the
"primary porters" do this work...
It's not too much of a hassle to do this myself locally I suppose if you
really don't want this in temporarily.
