I realize now that my suggestion was misguided. I had no idea the font was to blame when I first learned LaTeX/LyX. (Even worse, Google did not yet exist to answer all my questions.) But given that recent versions of Acrobat now decently render CM, the problem seems much less severe than before. I can only hope that other LaTeX distributions follow the lead of MiKTeX 2.8 and replace the default with lm. -Ben
