Designing one somewhat consistent set of icons is already a huge amount of
work. Introducing more variants will reduce the consistency and make it a
lot harder to introduce new toolbars and icons. It think it's better to
spend the limited time on one good icon set rather than three sets with
lower quality. There's already a tendency in open source products like LyX
to introduce way too many options and features because of the personal
opinions of all developers. For example, because of this we currently have
to maintain three different build systems. I think we should follow the
opinion of the majority of users/developers rather than introduce more and
more options.
